There are a lot of reasons for a water dispenser in a refrigerator to not work anymore. Again, some suggestions are going to sound a little strange. However, something as simple as an off switch has been the cause in the past. Be sure to inspect the more obvious potential problems prior to proceeding with refrigerator repair. Let’s start to cover this appliance repair problem and see all of the solutions we can come up with for a broken water dispenser.

The reason for a water dispenser not working is usually either an installation problem, a filter issue or frozen water lines:

New Refrigerator Installation Problems

You just purchased a new refrigerator with a water dispenser, but it’s not working. The water dispenser must be connected to the home’s water line. That might be the issue.

If the brand new refrigerator is replacing an older refrigerator that didn’t include an ice maker or water dispenser, there’s a possibility that you do not have a water line near this area. Most of the time a water line is commonly run from under a house either in a crawl space or basement. You can purchase this line at just about any home repair store and they’re pretty easy for the typical homeowner to install. Usually they have include a water shut-off valve, which is important so that if you should need to move the refrigerator, you can turn off the water.

If you have an attached water line, is the valve on? The valve handle should be in line with the hose. And, is there water running through the pipe that you have installed to connect the water line? Simple and common questions, but items that need to be accounted for.

If you had to remove the refrigerator doors during installation the water dispenser might not be plugged in. Read the manual to see the wire harness for that particular refrigerator. Be sure that it’s plugged into the refrigerator.

If the water line is hooked up, most of the time there’s air in the water line. So, lifting and lowering the dispenser lever on the refrigerator to get the air out is needed.
Filter Issues

On some of the popular models, there are different filters. These filters can “expire”, clog or become frozen. All filters are dependent on your model and type of refrigerator. If the filter is clogged it might cause slow filling or no flowing. It’s recommended that your filter be replaced every 6 months. Changing filters in a refrigerator can be hard sometimes. If you have hiccups, go online or call us and learn the right process to replace a filter.

One suggestion is to fill up the water filter with water before installing it. Typically the water filters take a long amount of time to fill, which might lead you to think the water dispenser isn’t working. You will want to read the owner’s manual if nothing is working. To be sure it’s not air trapped in the water lines, we recommend to depress the dispenser arm for around 5 minutes.

A frozen water tank might be the source of the problem as well in some models. If the tank freezes it will leak onto the fresh food bins. Limited food inside of the fresh food bins will cause freezing to occur.
